Details
We realize that 4 1/2 to 6 year old campers have much different needs than our older campers in terms of life experience, obdy awareness, coordination, and curiosity. MDC Junior is specifically geared towards the developmental needs of this younger age group.

  • Summer 1-Week Sessions are offered for boys & girls ages 4 1/2 to 6
  • From 9am to 3pm
  • Counselor to Camper ratio of 1:6
  • Located at the Living School (19th & Arapahoe in Boulder)
  • Caring camp counselors lead age appropriate activities in a fun and safe environment.

Activities
MDC Junior offers a mix of camper-directed and intentionally planned activities--campers collectively choose portions of their schedules and camp counselors modify activities to meet each camper at his or her skill and comfort level. Activities are guided by our camp philosophy and developmental goals.

We realize that Junior Campers need the structure of attending the same program throughout the summer. Because of this, we have created themes for each week. Campers can attend camp for multiple sessions and themes will help keep campers engaged and excited from session to session.

Preparing campers for the day:
• MDC Junior Campers love to open each morning with energizing camp songs.
• Campers build connections with other MDC Junior campers by playing teambuilding games.

Authentic nature-based opportunities are provided:
• During trips to Boulder Creek: fort building, fishing, river ecology
• On hikes in Boulder’s foothills: 'Leave No Trace' environmental ethics, hiking techniques & etiquette, insect catching & study
• While bouldering: teamwork, reptiles, rock study
• Weekly themes help drive activity topics and aleviate the chance for boredom for repeat campers

Play & Individual Needs
1. Camp Counselors help guide campers during play to make choices that match their individual interests while offering new challenges.
2. Play enables MDC Junior Campers to learn about their relationships with peers and the world around them.
3. MDC Junior Campers emerge as more confident and better self-directed children who are excited to take on new challenges.
4. MDC Junior campers explore their creative interests in art, cooking and crafts projects.
5. Playtime after lunch allows campers to burn off energy or rest and energize for the afternoon.

Closing each day:
Each day wraps up with stories and quieter camp songs that help campers unwind and get ready to share their days with their families.

Other activities:
MDC Junior campers also enjoy short hikes, group games, story time, arts & crafts, cooking projects, and science based activities.

About our pricing: Mountain Day Camp offers one of the premium camp experiences in Boulder County. To cover the costs of maintaining quality programs and staff, we have had to raise our prices over our first three summers. Consider that the your camp fees cover the following:
- Transportation to & from camp and our activity sites
- Great, mature and highly trained staff at a ratio of 6 MDC Junior campers to 1 cabin counselor
- 8 hour camp days

Camperships
We have a Campership Fund (Scholarship Fund) so that every family that wants to send their children to camp may do so. Camperships are awarded in almost any amount from $50 - $500 to many families. Contact us if you would like to discuss this program; last summer, almost 10% of our campers received some form of financial assistance.

Camperships are available based on completion of a scholarship application. Application deadline is 30 days prior to the start of the session. A fundraising event will be held in Spring 2008; contact us if you would like to donate to the fund or volunteer your time.

Locations
Unlike our traditional Mountain Day Camp program, MDC Jr. must be based out of a physical Living School Logobuilding because of State Childcare Licensing requirements.

We use the Living School as our home base and then venture out to explore the outdoors at Boulder Creek and various other locations throughout Boulder. The indoor location gives us a cool shady spot to eat lunch and rest afterwards when we are not out on the trail. We also visit the Spruce Pool on Wednesdays.

Transportation
Junior campers often have excursions throughout Boulder and are transported in camp vehicles. It is recommended that parents drop off child seats on days of outings (they will be listed on your Parent Calendar) if your camper uses one in your personal vehicle.

What to Bring

  • A full water bottle
  • A hat
  • Car seat (if your camper uses one)
  • Sturdy athletic or hiking shoes (sorry, no Crocks or Keens)
  • Rain jacket and pants
  • A spare change of clothes and underwear (just in case!)
  • Sweatshirt or fleece
  • A sack lunch
  • A positive and fun attitude!
