Our Directors

Tommy Feldman, the Founder and Director of Mountain Day Camp, grew up at camp. After many summers at day camp in Cleveland, Ohio, he started as one of the youngest campers and finished as Associate Director at North Star Camp in Wisconsin. After 5 years working at Cheley Colorado Camps in Estes Park, Tommy is taking his 25 years of camp experience and making his dream come true.

Tommy is very involved in the American Camp Association as the Chair of the ACA National Young Professionals Committee. He is considered an upcoming industry leader and is a frequent presenter at camp conferences around the country. Tommy graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Natural Resource Management.

“The growth I experienced at camp influences everything I do in work and play. I wouldn’t be who I am, and I wouldn’t have my energetic and independent approach to life without it. Little did I know the influence camp was having on my life – I was just having fun!”

Betsy Strohmaier, brings 12 years of experience in camping to Mountain Day Camp. She started as a residential camp counselor and coordinator at YMCA Camp Surf in San Diego, California. It was at Camp Surf that Betsy first experienced the unlimited possibilities and excitement that camps create. She was drawn to the development that occurs with youth both individually and as part of a community in the camp setting.

As an undergraduate at San Diego State University, Betsy managed the ARC Team Challenge, facilitating student and community groups through teambuilding, retreat, and high ropes course programs. After receiving a BS in Recreation Administration with an Outdoor Emphasis, she took a full time position as the Team Training and Climbing Manager at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in San Diego. Shortly, she also became director the Center’s year round Day Camp. The program served over 2000 campers per summer and offered year round day camp and after school programs for families in the San Diego area.

Betsy has always loved working with camps, families and campers. She enjoys sharing the magic of camp with campers and staff in an environment where the impossible can be achieved.

Our Summer Leadership

Kay Kamienski, Eldorado Canyon Program Director, grew up on the east coast. She graduated CU-Boulder with a BA in Anthropology, Minor in Geology. This is Kay’s third year with Mountain Day Camp and her first year as the Program Director.

Kay has been involved with many Outdoor Leadership programs in the past; including a one-month stint in the Boundary Waters with Outward Bound. Kay has spent the past year living and working in Denver. Her former residences include climbing and working in New Zealand, and doing field research in South Africa.

In Kay’s downtime, she enjoys climbing, hiking, and camping. Kay is extremely excited to return to Mountain Day Camp for another fun-filled, adventurous summer.

Tim Main, MDC's Summer Inclusion Coordinator, grew up in Boulder, Colorado and graduated from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon with a B.A. in Psychology. Tim has worked at many nature camps across the country teaching children about ecological concepts and community involvement. While he was a MDC counselor in 2006, he especially enjoyed working with a session for campers with sensory integration issues. Since graduation, Tim has worked with the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative, whose goal is to provide accurate data to policy makers on issues surrounding children's health and special needs.

Tim will pursue his Ph.D in Applied Social Psychology at Claremont Graduate University in California in the fall. He will research and work directly with community organizations on issues such as: people's attitudes and behaviors towards sustainability, HIV/AIDS prevention, and place-based education.

In his spare time, Tim is an avid rock climber and looks forward to the summer in Eldorado Canyon! After a fun day of camp you will most likely find him climbing the rocks, attempting to do yoga on a slackline, drawing in the sun or playing his saxophone. Tim has always loved being an active part of a fun, supportive community and is excited to spend his second summer at Mountain Day Camp!
